New roundabout closes some roads for summer on MTSU campus

A new roundabout project scheduled to begin this week on the north side of the MTSU campus will require partial closure of some campus roads.

The roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Champion Way and Lightning Way, said Ron Malone, assistant vice president for events and transportation.

In order for the project to be completed by fall, Champion Way will be closed at Faulkinberry Drive and at the entrance to the Holmes Building. Lightning Way will also be closed at Founders Lane, Malone said.

Access to the north side of campus will remain available via Blue Raider Drive from Greenland Drive.

A map of the road closings may be found at the MTSU Parking and Transportation Services website, www.mtsu.edu/parking under the “Summer 2013 Road Construction” tab, or visit http://bit.ly/mtsu-roundabout-2013. You also can see a close-up view of the affected area at left.

As construction progresses, the university will accommodate summer modifications to the “Green Route” shuttle bus for students. MTSU Parking and Transportation Services will notify the campus of these route changes when they become necessary.

The roundabout project is part of an overall campus improvement plan designed to improve shuttle bus efficiency and traffic flow, relieve traffic congestion, improve pedestrian walkways and lighting, and provide bike lanes into campus and around the perimeter of the academic core.

The four-phase, $30 million traffic plan has already created two roundabouts on campus: Blue Raider Drive at MTSU Boulevard, which was the first of its kind at a Tennessee public university when it opened in 2008, and Blue Raider Drive at Lightning Way at the northwest edge of Scarlett Commons.

Campus officials chose the roundabout route after studying a safety report indicating that roundabouts are safer than traditional traffic circles and intersections, showing about 40 percent fewer collisions and 80 percent fewer injuries to drivers and pedestrians. Other universities with traffic roundabouts include Stanford University, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland.

TSSAA tournaments mean MTSU parking, traffic changes

If it’s March in Tennessee, that means it’s TSSAA time at MTSU — and time for temporary traffic changes, too!

The boys’ TSSAA Division 1 High School Basketball Tournament, set this Wednesday through Saturday, March 13-16, will cause changes in parking and traffic patterns on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. MTSU hosted the girls’ tournament March 6-9.

During the tournament, motorists should be aware of several factors affecting roads and parking.

  • The Greenland Drive parking lot will be reserved for TSSAA ticketholders during both tournaments, and vehicles must pay $5 to park there. Students and faculty who use the Greenland Drive lot should prepare now to find alternative parking on campus.
  • MTSU’s East Main Street, Blue Raider Drive and Rutherford Boulevard entrances will be the most convenient campus entry points during the tournaments, officials said.
  • Team buses again will park on the east side of Middle Tennessee Boulevard in what is usually the right northbound lane.

Motorists also should keep in mind the various construction projects under way around MTSU and allow extra time to reach their campus destinations and make use of the university’s perimeter parking lots.

MTSU will be on spring break March 11-17, and no classes will be held. The Raider Xpress shuttle service also will not run while the university is on spring break.

University offices will be open regular hours during the break.

All other events scheduled on campus during the tournaments will be allowed first-come, first-served parking in any of MTSU’s free lots, based on availability.

Construction changes still affecting Blue Raider Drive traffic

Students, faculty, staff and visitors who drive on MTSU’s Blue Raider Drive near the new Student Union should continue using alternate routes to get around the east side of campus for the next few days.

Blue Raider Drive will remain closed through Thursday, Jan. 10, between the Student Union Roundabout and Homecoming Circle, according to the Office of Parking and Transportation Services.

During this period, the access gate to Old Main Circle alongside the Cope Administration Building will remain open to allow traffic to reach the inner areas of campus.

The roadway has been closed since Dec. 17, two days after fall 2012 commencement ceremonies, to allow work to proceed during the less-busy winter break period.

Spring 2013 classes begin on Thursday, Jan. 17.
