NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee State University transfer student Savanah Gill and Tony Strode, director of undergraduate admissions, know the importance of transferring to a four-year university after completing an associate degree.

With MTSU’s transfer deadline looming on Feb. 15, the two visited WKRN News 2 for the university’s “MTSU on 2” segment to discuss what guaranteed transfer scholarships — $3,000 per year for students who meet the criteria — and to talk about the opportunities available to transfer students.

You can watch the segment, part of the station’s Local on 2 programming, with program co-host and producer Laura Schweizer and co-host Stephanie Langston below.

Having received an associate degree in marketing from Motlow State Community College in May 2024, Gill began her education journey at MTSU last August, majoring in marketing, with a digital marketing concentration within the Jones College of Business. Initially she said she never considered MTSU as a serious contender solely because of its close proximity to home.

“Once I realized how seamless MTSU made the transfer process and saw that I would get rewarded even more with the guaranteed transfer scholarship just by transferring to MTSU, it solidified my decision,” she said. “Everything I heard about MTSU sounded too good to be true, so I never believed it was possible, but it was true.”

Since arriving at MTSU, Gill has taken advantage of student opportunities, ranging from serving on the Blue Elite student team that gives campus tours to potential students to working with the university’s Marketing and Communications Division, where she works as a social media student worker.

“The social media team and Blue Elite have introduced me to faculty, staff and people outside the university, expanding my network greatly,” she said. “With the social media team, I experience events and new things on campus while getting paid, which is a win-win for a new transfer student.”

Gill also plans to study abroad in Europe by cruise, and will travel to Paris, London, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

“While there, I will be learning about the different ways they market overseas and collecting data on the cruise for a research study,” Gill explained.

Strode discussed the benefits of transfer students applying to MTSU by the Feb. 15 deadline.

“At MTSU, we strive to make the transfer process as smooth and accessible as possible. Students can seamlessly transfer their credits and jump right into their program of study,” Strode said.

Around 50% of MTSU students are transfers, and members of the admissions team recently completed its annual Promise Tour visiting four Midstate community colleges to connect with prospective students.

“We offer excellent transfer pathways with Tennessee community colleges, and students even have the option to reverse transfer their credits back to their community college while taking courses at MTSU,” Strode said.

MTSU offers guided campus tours throughout the spring and fall semesters. Self-guided tours are also available. For information, call 615-898-5670 or email admissions@mtsu.edu.
