MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The March episode of “Out of the Blue,” Middle Tennessee State University’s television program, takes viewers inside the Academic Classroom Building to spotlight change, creativity and new opportunities within the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences.

This special edition focuses on how the college is preparing for the future through strategic reorganization, hands-on student experiences and the launch of a new interdisciplinary graduate certificate.

This month’s guests were interviewed by program host Andrew Oppmann, vice president of the Division of Marketing and Communications, inside the Academic Classroom Building, home to numerous CBHS programs and offices.

Karli Sutton, reporter for True Blue TV, previews “Galleries in Motion,” the annual runway show hosted by MTSU’s newly named Fashion Studies program, previously Textile, Merchandising and Design, or TXMD. Scheduled for April, the runway show serves as a signature showcase for student designers, bringing their work from the classroom to the runway in a fully produced live show.

Sutton explains how the runway experience reflects the program’s evolution and highlights the creativity, technical skill and collaboration that define the program. The show continues to be a staple event for students and the campus community alike.

Dr. Justin Singleton
Kobi Jones

Justin Singleton, an adjunct instructor in Social Work, introduces Sport Social Work, a new graduate certificate program launching this fall within the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. The interdisciplinary program focuses on the overall well-being of athletes, addressing mental health, vulnerability and holistic support both on and off the field.

Developed with support from leaders in the growing field of sport social work, the certificate prepares practitioners to serve athletes from youth through adulthood using the principles and practices of social work.

Singleton is joined by Kobi Jones, the program’s first student, who earned his undergraduate degree in social work from MTSU and plans to combine his background as a former athlete and coach with professional training in the field. Jones is currently completing an internship with MTSU’s Student-Athlete Enhancement Center, working directly with freshman football players as he helps pioneer the new program.
