‘MTSU On the Record’ delves into new library leadership workbook

An MTSU library leader discussed useful techniques for those aiming for leadership roles in libraries in a recent “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Dr. Jason Martin, associate dean of the James E. Walker Library, first aired Aug. 6 on WMOT-FM Roots Radio and www.wmot.org. You can hear their conversation above.

Martin is the author of “Library Leadership Your Way,” a workbook full of philosophy, best practices and exercises for anyone interested in leadership roles in libraries, either public or private.

Published by the American Library Association, Martin’s book encourages readers to answer self-reflective questions about their motives and methods by writing them in the book.

Instead of advocating one type of leadership over another, “Library Leadership Your Way” presents an assortment of management styles to help the reader find the right approach for his or her situation.

“There might be some general things we should all do as leaders, but I designed it this way so that people could be purposefully introspective,” Martin said.

“To me, when it comes down to leadership, it’s really about why you want to be a leader and what purpose you have and what meaning you find in leadership.”
