To commemorate the holiday, Hilary Miller, director of the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center, is inviting the campus community and public to visit the MTSU Veterans Memorial, adjacent to the Tom H. Jackson Building, at 628 Alma Mater Drive.

The memorial sits in a peaceful courtyard adorned with gray, polished stone pillars featuring the seals of different U.S. military branches along with gently sloping walls and a mosaic of bricks engraved with the names of MTSU’s 72 fallen.

“All visitors are welcome to leave flowers, notes and small flags at the memorial,” Miller said.

She also encouraged everyone to visit the Daniels Center’s virtual memorial and Roll of Honor webpages, both of which aim to keep the memories alive of MTSU Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“These virtual resources continue to be an important part of preserving the memory of our veterans and connecting our community of campus veterans,” Miller said. “Last week alone, our office was in contact with four veteran families — three with loved ones from WWII and one from the Vietnam War — and able to use these resources to help them connect with each other and even help one family member locate where her relative is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.”

Miller added the staff is constantly working with the community to get veterans’ stories and share them, highlighting that staff know most of these names by heart.

“If you knew any of our university community’s fallen and would like to send pictures or stories to update their bios, please reach out to me,” she said.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in the line of duty in service to their country and is observed annually on the last Monday of May.
