MURFREESBORO, Tenn — Middle Tennessee State University’s March edition of “Out of the Blue,” the university’s television magazine program, features two professional degree programs through the College of Education — both 100% online.
Everett Singleton, associate professor in the college’s Womack Department of Educational Leadership, spoke with host Andrew Oppmann, vice president of the university’s Division of Marketing and Communications, about the programs.

The College of Education offers a master’s degree and specialist degree in two concentrations, instructional leadership and higher education, both programs completely online.
A master’s degree is an advanced degree after an undergraduate program, while a specialist degree sits between a master’s and doctorate.
The instructional leadership concentration focuses on allowing educators to go from teachers to leaders. The program will create leaders that “focus on things like school improvement and student success and achievement,” said Singleton.

With the instructional leadership degree, graduates have opportunities to attain leadership positions like a principal or department head.
The higher education track, meanwhile, focuses on skills required to work within a university.
“(It’s) designed for individuals who want to be in various roles within higher education. It could be at advising, financial aid, institutional research, student success, support centers, and things like that within higher education,” Singleton explained.
The higher education concentration allows students to expand problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.

Singleton, a 1999 graduate of MTSU, teaches classes in both concentration areas. He continued his education, receiving a master’s in education from Union University, a master’s in urban education from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and a Ph.D. from Colorado State University-Fort Collins.
He taught for five years at Northwest Missouri State University before returning to MTSU.
“I wanted to come back home, be close to the family, and teach at my alma mater,” said Singleton.
