MTSU on WGNS: Family violence panels, online course offerings, Chinese music center anniversary [LISTEN]

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee State University representatives recently appeared on WGNS Radio to discuss an upcoming series of family violence panels open to the public, growth of online course offerings and enrollment, and plans to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Center for Chinese Music and Culture.

They appeared on the live “Action Line” program with host Scott Walker, broadcast on FM 100.5, 101.9 and AM 1450 from the WGNS studio in downtown Murfreesboro. If you missed it, you can listen to podcast segments of the Feb. 16 program by clicking the links below at the end of each section.

Guests for the February program, in order of appearance, included:

• Dr. Rebecca Oldham, assistant professor in the Human Development and Family Science program within MTSU’s Human Sciences Department, discussed the fourth annual Family Violence panels on campus March 26, April 9 and April 16.

Oldham partners with multiple colleges and departments to offer three panel-style events focused on different types of family violence and featuring local field experts, Q&A sessions, networking opportunities and refreshments. Students, staff and the community at large are invited to attend the free sessions.

The panels have broad appeal and are not just for students, offering practical information to the public. Panelists consist of professionals from different backgrounds such as policy work, advocacy, lawyers, financial advisors and therapists, among others.

All Q&A panels will be held in the Academic Classroom Building, Room 102. Guests may also attend via Zoom. ASL interpretation will be available. MTSU Online has experienced record-breaking growth over the past several years, offering thousands of students, many of whom are part-time employees or are full-time working professionals looking to upskill or pursue an advanced degree, with the flexibility needed for them to fulfill their academic goals.

MTSU Online offers key student services for online students, such as counseling services, 24/7 live subject tutoring, library services and writing center tutors. MTSU’s Center for Chinese Music and Culture serves as a hub for exploring and sharing China’s rich musical and cultural traditions. Its mission is to connect regional, national, and global communities with these traditions, fostering mutual understanding through learning, scholarship, and service opportunities.

Housed in a 3,200-square-foot space at MTSU’s Miller Education Center, the center includes a gallery of Chinese musical instruments, a library and archives, and two classrooms. It also collaborates with the MTSU School of Music to offer a for-credit Chinese Ensemble course.

A 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 21 at Hinton Hall inside the Wright Music Building on campus, featuring MTSU Chinese Music Ensemble student members, several ensemble alumni, faculty musicians and special guest artists. The Middle Tennessee Zheng Ensemble will perform.
