MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — “Out of the Blue,” Middle Tennessee State University’s monthly television magazine program, takes viewers inside the MTSU Police Department in the July episode, highlighting the many services and resources available to support the campus community.

Operating around the clock and led by Chief Edwin Kaup, the MTSU Police Department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency that provides public safety services across campus. While many people recognize officers for responding to emergencies, the department also offers a variety of programs aimed at preventing problems, assisting students and promoting campus safety throughout the year.

The segment explores several of those services, including 24/7 safety escorts, Operation ID, vehicle assistance and educational outreach programs. It also highlights the department’s K-9 unit, which supports major campus events through explosives and narcotics detection, and tracking and evidence recovery, as well as Raider Patrol, a student employment program that provides hands-on experience for those interested in careers in law enforcement.

Sgt. Katelynn Liedtke said one of the department’s biggest priorities is making sure students know officers are always available to help.

“I think the biggest thing that we just want students to know is that we’re here for you, so don’t ever hesitate to call us no matter how small you think the issue is,” Liedtke said.

The story also examines how MTSU Police combines traditional law enforcement with community engagement, emphasizing the department’s role in educating, assisting and building relationships with students, faculty and staff beyond emergency response.
