September 2026 OOTB episode segment 2

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — “Out of the Blue,” Middle Tennessee State University’s monthly television magazine program, takes viewers inside the newly renovated Kirksey Old Main in the September episode, exploring the building’s history and its new role on campus.

The segment looks back at Kirksey Old Main’s beginnings as the center of MTSU’s campus when the university was founded in 1911, before following the landmark into its latest chapter after a $31 million renovation.

The renovated building now serves programs in mathematical sciences, computer science, data science and actuarial science, bringing updated classrooms and laboratories together with reminders of the building’s more than century-long history.

The story also explores what returning to Kirksey Old Main means for the students and faculty who were temporarily scattered across campus during construction, and how the building is helping bring back a sense of community.

“It’s like the oldest building on campus now houses all things of the future, like tech,” said Medha Sarkar, a professor of computer science. “I think that’s such a great connection right there that we’ve got history, but we’re also looking forward to the future.”

More than a century after it first opened its doors, Kirksey Old Main continues to connect MTSU’s history with its future.
