The AronBerkner Duo, featuring Stephen Aron on classical guitar and Jane Berkner on flute, will present a free public concert at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, in Hinton Music Hall inside MTSU’s Wright Music Building.
The duo has been performing together for more than a decade with a repertoire that spans the flute and guitar masterworks and features several works especially written for them.
Featured in their MTSU concert will be performances of “Suite in G Minor” by Michel Blavet, “Kembang Suling” by Gareth Farr, “Sonatina Tropical” by José Lezcano, “Prelude et Danse” by Benoit Albert, “Vals del Olvido” by Marco Granados, “Sonata” by James Wilding and “Triptico Criollo” by Ricardo Iznaola.
The AronBerkner Duo has been performing across the United States and Canada in the last year. Their appearances in Italy led to an annual summer chamber music festival there, “Suonare in Italia.”
Guitarist Aron has performed and taught at the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, Tulane University, MIT, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Mannes College of Music, just to name a few. An active recording artist, he has released eight CDs featuring music almost entirely of his own creation, either by arrangement or composition.
His performances also include the complete mazurkas of Chopin, volumes of music of Mendelssohn and Schumann and new works by both contemporary composers and “lost” works like the complete guitar works of Walter Burle Marx.
Flutist Berkner has been on the Ohio Touring Artist’s Roster since 1992, first with the flute and harp duo Berkner & Bell and later as a solo artist, performing in recital series and school concerts across the state. She has performed with the Akron, Ashland, Canton and Youngstown Symphonies, the Ohio Ballet Orchestra, O’Neil Chamber Players and the Chamber Music Society of Ohio.
Berkner is a senior lecturer of flute at the University of Akron and also is part of the music faculty at Ashland University. She is an active clinician, judge and flute choir conductor at regional festivals and classes.
