With MTSU top administrators, deans and faculty representatives in attendance wearing their academic regalia, Convocation will be part of events welcoming freshmen and transfer students to begin the academic year.

“Convocation is an important day for our new students and their families and for us as a community,” said Laurie Witherow, interim vice provost for Enrollment Services.

“For the 22nd year, MTSU will welcome our newest transfer students and members of the MTSU Class of 2027 in our formal opening to the fall semester: University Convocation,” added Witherow, who will provide the welcome. “All of these students are about to transition to members of the MTSU community of learners, the True Blue Family.”

Convocation is hosted by MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee. Student Government Association President Michai Mosby will lead the student in reciting the True Blue Pledge. Members of the Band of Blue will perform the national anthem, and an overhead group photo of students will be taken at the conclusion of the event.

Convocation will feature Bruce Feiler, a writer and television personality. He has written “Life Is in the Transitions: Mastering Change at Any Age,” the 2023 MTSU Summer Reading Program book for new MTSU students.

“Who better to address them than Convocation keynote speaker and author of seven New York Times bestsellers, Bruce Feiler?” Witherow said. “The excitement in the arena will come from the promise all these new students bring to our campus.”

The reading program, a service of the Distinguished Lecture Committee, was created in 2002 to provide students with books that affirm the importance of reading for a successful and fulfilling life and opportunities to interact with critically acclaimed authors.

Classes begin Monday, Aug. 28, marking the start of the MTSU fall 2023 semester.

Busy weekend

The day before Convocation, Feiler will autograph copies of his book during the New Student and Family Programs Back to School Bash, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, in the Student Union Commons.

Several hours after Convocation, students will attend the New Student and Family Programs-sponsored Commons Kickoff and Fraternity and Sorority Life-sponsored Fraternity and Sorority Meet and Greet, both from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Student Union Commons.
