MTSU students promote Irish sport with camp, tournament

The MT Hurling Club, the only hurling club in Tennessee, will sponsor a hurling camp and tournament May 12 and 13 at the MTSU Sport Club Complex, located at 2111 E. Main St. in Murfreesboro.

Hurling club members, most of whom are MTSU students, will demonstrate the fast-paced ancient Irish sport, which involves elements of baseball, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. Camp activities are slated for the morning sessions, and tournament action is scheduled each afternoon.

Mac Dara Mac Donncha, an award-winning hurler for Galway and Waterford in Ireland, will head the coaching staff. A fully qualified Level One Tutor, Donncha has tutored many games throughout his southern Ireland province of Munster.

With Pat Daly, Gaelic Athletic Association director of games, Donncha compiled and produced an introduction to hurling for worldwide distribution in 2009. Donncha also has been a commentator for the Gaelic Games on television station TG4 and Raidio na Gaeltachta since 1997.

The camp is open to males and females, even those with no experience in the sport. Extra equipment will be provided for those without gear.

The camp enrollment fee is $20 per person; there is no charge to participate in the tournament.

The MT Hurling Club camp is supported by the MTSU Office of International Affairs and O’Possum’s Pub, which is one of the club’s sponsors.
