MTSU cadets commissioned as U.S. Army second lieutenants

Middle Tennessee State University December graduates Javier Hernandez and Drew Sanders-Gentry are preparing to move into the next phase of their military careers.

The two were commissioned as U.S. Army second lieutenants in a special ceremony following fall commencement and are now readying for leadership classes out of state.

Drew Sanders-Gentry, who is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, graduated with a bachelor’s in finance. Also commissioned active duty, he will begin his basic officer leadership class at Fort Gregg-Adams in February.

Javier Hernandez, who is from La Vergne, Tennessee, graduated with a bachelor’s in business administration. Receiving an active duty commission, he will begin his basic officer leadership class at Fort Gregg-Adams in Prince George County, Virginia, in March.

MTSU Military Science ROTC commissioning ceremonies are a formal event celebrating cadets moving forward in their military journeys. They include the swearing-in by a military leader, pinning by family member and first salute from family or friends. They graduated in Dec. 16 ceremonies held in Murphy Center.

Hernandez, who is from La Vergne, Tennessee, graduated with a bachelor’s in business administration. Receiving an active duty commission, he will begin his basic officer leadership class at Fort Gregg-Adams in Prince George County, Virginia, in March.

Sanders-Gentry, who is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, graduated with a bachelor’s in finance. Also commissioned active duty, he will begin his basic officer leadership class at Fort Gregg-Adams in February.
