MTSU’s Stones River Chamber Players will continue their 2019-20 season Sunday, Nov. 24, with a free public concert, “Conversations,” at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church off Murfreesboro’s Public Square.

The ensemble-in-residence of MTSU School of Music professors will perform at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at St. Paul’s, located at 116 N. Academy St.

The concert will feature Divertimento for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet, Op. 37, composed by Sir Malcolm Arnold; composer Kaija Saariaho’s “Aure” for violin and cello; “Convergence,” composed by MTSU jazz trumpet professor Jamey Simmons; the song cycle “Ten Blake Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; and composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “Assobio a Játo,” or “The Jet Whistle.”

Chamber players Deanna Little, David Cyzak and Todd Waldecker will perform Arnold’s “Divertimento” on flute, oboe and clarinet, while violinist Andrea Dawson and cellist Christine Kim will play Saariaho’s “Aure.”

Simmons will present his own work, accompanied by percussionist Brian Mueller.

“Working closely with Dr. Mueller on this composition has been an enjoyable experience,” Simmons said of “Convergence.”

“This work embodies a lot of the fun behind that collaborative process, and we are looking forward to the performance.”

Cyzak will return to perform “Ten Blake Songs” with tenor H. Stephen Smith, calling the work, which features a poetic recitation, “a unique pairing of voice and oboe without piano accompaniment.”

Little and Kim will close the concert with the “fun and challenging” “Assobio a Játo,” which Little said has “been a delight to finally get to play.”

This MTSU Arts concert performance season, with a theme of “Resonant Vistas,” will conclude Monday, Feb. 24, when the Stones River Chamber Players will return to the MTSU campus for a free 7:30 p.m. concert, “Journeys,” in Hinton Hall inside MTSU’s Wright Music Building at 1439 Faulkinberry Drive in Murfreesboro.
