MTSU’s 16th Alumni Summer College unleashes creative side; May 23 RSVP deadline

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee State University’s 16th annual Alumni Summer College returns with a focus on the arts.

Titled “Masterpiece in the Making: Creativity Beyond the Canvas,” the event runs June 25-27 at various on- and off-campus venues. The $275 fee to attend the college will cover each class, food, transportation and field trips. Participants must register by Friday, May 23, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis as space is limited.

This year’s program will focus on different art forms like photography, dancing and sculpture.

“We bring our alumni back to college and we focus on specific departments on campus that we want to showcase,” said Beth Dye, assistant director of alumni engagement with Alumni Relations, during a recent appearance on the WGNS “Action Line” program.

Organized by Alumni Relations, College of Liberal Arts and College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, the program aims to “make you step out of your box a little bit,” said Dye.

A sample of classes has been released on the MT alumni website, including:

• Sharing Our Stories: Storytelling is a fundamental part of the human experience and is also experiencing a resurgence as a performance art form. In this interactive workshop, participants can try on the tools of expressive communication and explore the ways storytelling can connect us to one another.

• Two Stepping in Line: Come boot scoot and have a good time.

• The Basics of Textiles: An overview of textiles from fiber to fabric. We will discuss the process by which fabrics are prepared to be the raw material used in apparel, interiors, technical and special use products.

• Field trips to the Maxwell Gallery and Frist Art Museum will be included.

Participants have the option to bring a guest. Guests do not have to be MTSU alumni to attend.
