New MTSU professor discusses workplace bullying on ‘MTSU On the Record’

A professor with expertise on a workplace phenomenon many thought they’d outgrown with the childhood playground was the guest on a recent “MTSU On the Record” radio program.

Dr. Michele Medina

Host Gina Logue’s interview with Dr. Michele Medina first aired July 4 on WMOT-FM Roots Radio 89.5 and www.wmot.org. You can listen to their conversation above.

Medina, who will begin work this fall as an assistant professor in the Department of Management in the university’s Jones College of Business, chose workplace bullying as the topic of her doctoral dissertation.

WMOT Roots Radio-new logo-2017 web Instead of focusing on the perpetrators or the targets of workplace bullying, Medina concentrated on the workers who stand by and say and do nothing while a colleague is being tormented.

“I had prerecorded a set of videos that depicted either a neutral co-worker interaction, a bystander or a bullying incident between co-workers,” said Medina. “The participants would come in, they would watch the videos, and then they would answer a set of questions based on the videos.”

Medina comes to MTSU from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where she was an adjunct management professor.
