MURFRESBORO, Tenn. — Chaney MosleyMiddle Tennessee State University School of Agriculture director, outlines the variety of programs, a new data-driven agri-analytics certificate available to students and more in the June edition of “Out of the Blue,” the university’s television magazine show.

Mosley talks about the program, one of 11 College of Basic and Applied Sciences departments, with “Out of the Blue” host Andrew Oppmann, MTSU vice president of Marketing and Communications.

Mosley said the School of Agriculture offers five academic majors: Animal Science, Agribusiness, Plant and Soil Science and Fermentation Science, with a master’s degree offered in Horse Science.

With Oppmann, Mosley discussed Plant and Soil Science — “a really interesting program because it’s the incorporation of plants for both feed production for livestock and food production for human consumption,” he said, adding the faculty- and student-run MTSU Small Farm on Guy James Road east of campus participates in the Murfreesboro Saturday Market from May through Oct. 25.

Produce grown on the farm, fresh-cut flowers, microgreens, mushrooms and some certified U.S. Department of Agriculture organic items are offered.

Mosley said plans are in place to offer a fully online degree (the first in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences) focusing on agribusiness and agricultural marketing in the next few years.

Already in place is a new undergraduate certificate in agri-analytics, open to any student “to prepare graduates to meet the growing demand for the technology workforce in Middle Tennessee, specifically for those with content knowledge in agriculture but technical skills in data management and data analysis to fill these voids that organizations have,” Mosley said.

Industry partners have come on board to support the development of this undergraduate certificate, which may be the first of its kind in Tennessee, he added.

“It will provide students who participate with a tremendous amount of experiential learning and connection to potential employers upon graduation,” Mosley said. “I’m excited to see where this goes.”

Attractive to out of state students for providing in-state tuition, MTSU’s Academic Common Market offerings in the School of Agriculture includes fermentation science and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in horse science.
