May MTSU ‘Out of the Blue’ delves into neuromarketing, student-run Sidelines, ROTC milestone [+VIDEO]

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In the May edition of “Out of the Blue,” the television program for Middle Tennessee State University, viewers will delve into the emerging field of neuromarketing, hear about an evolving student-led media operation on campus, and learn about the rich history of the university’s Army ROTC program.

This month’s guests were interviewed by program host Andrew Oppmann, vice president of the Division of Marketing and Communications, from studios located in the Center for Educational Media inside the McWherter Learning Resources Center on campus.

May guests include:

• Dr. Gaia Rancati, assistant professor of marketing and neuromarketing in the Jones College of Business Marketing Department, discusses the emerging field of neuromarketing and how the college is training students in this area.

The Jones College of Business now features an undergraduate concentration in neuromarketing and artificial intelligence that combines cutting edge AI software with neuroscience tools, including a full laboratory that lets students study and gauge responses to advertising, messaging and much more.

• Noah McLane and Jenene Grover, journalism majors and the incoming editor-in-chief and managing editor respectively for Sidelines, discuss their roles and the mission of the student-run, editorially independent digital publication that recently added a magazine for its readers.

Currently up to a staff of about 40 student journalists, the publication provides students within the School of Journalism and Strategic Media and other disciplines with real-world, hands-on media experience while producing published clips for their portfolios as they cover and manage a variety of areas ranging from news to sports to features to entertainment.

• Lt. Col. Arlin Wilsher, professor in the Department of Military Science who also oversees to university’s Army ROTC Program, shares information about the program recently celebrating its 75th anniversary with a special campus event that featured several of the 17 alumni cadets who rose to the rank of general as well as two inductions into the MTSU ROTC Hall of Fame. 

Since its launch, the ROTC program has produced over 1,600 officers that were commissioned into all services of the Army, National Guard, and Reserves. The anniversary celebration also featured the opening of a time capsule that was buried by cadets 20 years ago.
