Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has appointed Middle Tennessee State University alumnus Tom Boyd of Lebanon, Tennessee, to a six-year term on the university’s Board of Trustees.
Boyd, an investment adviser representative with Decker Wealth Management in Nashville, will replace Andy Adams, who decided to not seek a second term on the 10-member board. The governor also reappointed business owners J.B. Baker and Pam Wright, who will also serve six-year terms.
With more than four decades of experience in financial management and banking, Boyd previously served as a senior vice president at Bank of America where he handled areas ranging from treasury management to commercial banking to loan administration.
“I’m greatly honored and look forward to serving the university in another capacity … and being of service in any way possible,” Boyd said. “I’m hoping to help the university continue to improve the quality of the education to the students and to provide greater opportunities for those students in their future endeavors.”
Boyd graduated from MTSU in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to earn his Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee. He served with the Tennessee Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976.
Boyd has maintained strong ties with MTSU, serving on numerous boards and committees that include the MTSU Foundation Board, Jennings A. Jones College of Business Professional Advisory Board and the Blue Raider Athletic Association.
“I’m proud that an alumnus with Tom’s extensive background in business and community service will be joining our great board,” said MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee. “I look forward to his contributions in shaping the direction of our institution and deeply appreciate the ongoing commitments of Trustees Wright and Baker in volunteering their time and talents.
“And of course we are grateful for Andy’s invaluable contributions in establishing our new governing body and his continued loyalty and support of his alma mater.”
Board Chairman Stephen Smith said he “deeply appreciated” Adams’ three years of service as a trustee and tried to talk the former healthcare executive from retiring from the board.
“Andy was an outstanding trustee who served the board well,” Smith added. “But I’m also very proud to welcome a new trustee in Tom Boyd who has a great love for the Blue Raider family and brings a wealth of financial expertise to our board.”
Boyd is a past recipient of the Jones College of Business’ Exemplar Award recognizing outstanding alumni. He and his wife, Martha, also an MTSU alumna (College of Education, Class of ’72, ’73), previously received the MTSU Alumni Association’s True Blue Citation of Distinction in the category of Service to the University, in part for launching an ethical leadership week on campus for students, alumni and business leaders.
Boyd is an active member at West Hills Baptist Church in Lebanon, and his civic involvement includes the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Tennessee Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America and the American Institute of Banking, among others.
