Members of the staff of Sidelines, MTSU’s student newspaper, celebrate their showings at the recent Southeast Journalism Conference Convention’s “Best of the South” competition at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. December 2012 graduate Chris Do, left, displays his fourth-place award as Best News Graphic Designer, while senior Jane Horne holds her fifth-place honor for Best Arts and Entertainment Writer. Horne, who is arts and entertainment editor for Sidelines, also is holding colleague Alex Hubbard’s second-place award for Best Sports Writer; Hubbard, a senior and former Sidelines sports editor, is not pictured.

The SEJC’s “Best of the South” competition recognizes student journalists and university publications in 23 individual and eight university categories. SEJC, an organization created to encourage greater interest in student journalism and to form closer ties among journalism schools in the Southeast, now has more than 45 member colleges and universities in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
