MTSU on WGNS: New research institute, study abroad to China, supporting student vets

MTSU faculty and staff appeared on WGNS Radio recently to share information about a new research institute, a study abroad trip to China and the university’s continued successful efforts to support student veterans.

The details were shared during the July 16 “Action Line” program with guest host Marty Daniels. The live program was broadcast on FM 100.5, 101.9 and AM 1450 from the WGNS studio in downtown Murfreesboro. If you missed it, you can listen to a podcast of the show here.

Guests and their topics were as follows: 

• Dr. Dan Smith, director of the new Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at MTSU, discussed his new role and his plans for the institute.

PERI, housed jointly in the Jennings A. Jones College of Business and the Honors College, will be a resource for MTSU students, faculty, and the broader community interested in exploring the ideas and institutions that promote human well-being and economic prosperity.

PERI’s mission is to engage undergraduate and graduate students with faculty in research that will further the understanding of free market business and economic principles, as well as their impact on regional, national, and international financial conditions and the well-being of society.

• Kevin McNulty, associate professor and Animation Program coordinator in the MTSU Department of Media Arts, discussed a recent study abroad trip to Guiyang, China, with a group of animation students.

The students from the MTSU Department of Media Artsanimation programreturned home earlier this summer after the university was invited back for a second year to participate in what is now being called “International Students Ocean Short Film Exhibition.”

McNulty led the group, who were part of a larger team of animation students that created a short film about the environment that was featured at the exhibition. Learn more here.

Shane Smith, veterans’ employee search agent in the Veterans Transitioning Home office of the Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center at MTSU, discussed the recent Veteran Impact Celebration featuring country music legend Charlie Daniels as well as the ongoing work by the Veterans Center to support student veterans.

The sold-out inaugural celebration was heldJune 28 at The Grove at Williamson Place in Murfreesboro was wildly successful and plans are already underway for next year. Read more here.
